I think the lesson here is: get really good at what you love doing.

For instance: Your design school professor might advise you not to fill your portfolio with only quirky illustrations and hand drawn type. He might tell you that your work is “cute” and “charming” but that you might want to show a more diverse range of styles. You yourself might wonder if working in a more traditional, commercial style will help your chances of finding work after graduation.
And none of these hypothetical people are wrong, but think of it another way: When somebody DOES want awesome hand drawn stuff, who do you think they’re going to come looking for?

Also: I want to steal this idea. I think we all should steal this idea. Let’s all write treatises on things like five o’clock shadows and then leave copies of them for people to find in custom-constructed brochure holders.
Cherry on top: grandiose ornamentation is one of my favorite things, hand-drawn typography is my other favorite thing, obviously.

Wish there were a bigger picture for this.
I’m reminded of one time when I was 17 at I was at a luxury soap store, admiring the luxurious soaps and their beautiful packaging. And I decided I would redesign and repackage all my toiletries as soon as I got home. But of course I still haven’t gotten around to it.
It also reminds me of the time my roommate took a paint marker and drew little faces on literally everything in our apartment.
This design seems to land somewhere between those two things.

Yesterday we talked about an energy drink that finally didn’t look like it was on steroids, so naturally today we are looking at steroids that look… still like steroid, but badass steampunk steroids

It’s nice to see some energy drink packaging that does not look like a rip-off of 80’s hair metal album art.
This is what I imagine all the energy drinks look like in Sweden. If IKEA made energy drinks - and hired a really good design firm- they might look like this.

Just as I was getting ready to post this, my friend IMed me to say this:
“what are my favorite things you ask??
that would be glee, kristin chen, roller skating and the boss and oh! tonight they will all be together!”
And I know just how you feel friend! Because three of my favorite things are Ornamentation, symmetry, and lots-of-crazy-shit-going-on.
Now I realize these things can seem stale and trite and over-used, but I feel like the above design pushes it just enough to make it look a little bit different and new.
Oh, and who exactly is the designer in question? I’m glad you asked. For they call themselves

so i guess its time for me to admit to myself that i really really love milk packaging.
